Sheikh Hasina Gets Sentenced in Absentia for Corruption

(MENAFN) A special court in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on Thursday delivered a 21-year prison sentence in absentia to exiled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with three corruption cases.

The charges relate to alleged misconduct in the allocation of plots in the Purbachal New Town project.

This ruling represents the first corruption conviction against Hasina since she sought refuge in India on August 5, following a widespread uprising against her administration.

Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court imposed seven-year sentences for each of the three cases.

Court records indicate that the cases revolve around the allotment of plots by RAJUK, the city’s development authority.

Hasina’s children, Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Saima Wazed Putul, were also convicted in absentia, receiving five-year prison terms each.

Earlier this year, on November 17, the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal had sentenced Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in a case involving crimes against humanity.

Prosecutors described these crimes as part of a harsh suppression of a student-led movement.

According to a UN report referenced during the trial, roughly 1,400 people lost their lives and around 20,000 were injured during the uprising.

The plot-allocation cases were initiated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in January.

The ACC alleged that Hasina misused her position as prime minister to acquire government land through RAJUK.

The charge sheet claimed that these actions violated RAJUK housing regulations, which forbid individuals who already own land in Dhaka from receiving additional plots in state-managed projects.
